My office can reach out to the Social Security Administration (SSA) to request information regarding a constituent's Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
COMMON AREAS OF ASSISTANCE
Social Security Overpayment: When SSA believes that it has sent you more money than it should have, the agency may instruct you to return the extra funds. If you have already filed a Request for Reconsideration (SSA 561), or a Request for Waiver of Overpayment Recovery (SSA 632), my office can contact Social Security to request a status update on these petitions. If you have requested a hearing before an administrative law judge (Form HA 501), my office can request a status update on this petition.
SSA Payment Delay: If you believe your payment from SSA has been unduly delayed for more than 30 days, my office can request a status update from SSA.
SSDI Hearing Status Update: If you have requested a hearing before an administrative law judge to appeal a decision related to your SSDI benefits, my office can request a status update on this hearing. If you believe your case meets the criteria for expedited processing, my office can also request a status update on your request for expedited processing.
LIMITATIONS TO ASSISTANCE
My office will do everything possible to assist constituents within the legal and practical limitations of a congressional office. Please note that a congressional inquiry does not guarantee faster processing or a favorable outcome. If my office reviews your concern and determines that it falls outside the scope of congressional assistance, my office will do our best to direct you to the appropriate resource for further help.
- Dispute Findings: Decisions made by SSA are final and cannot be overturned. My office is not authorized to dictate actions to federal agencies, and cannot assist in disputing findings determined by the SSA.
- Advise On Actions: My office is not equipped to advise on the best way to apply for Social Security benefits or to appeal the findings of the SSA. Constituents may contact their local Social Security field office directly, or seek assistance from an attorney.
