The U.S. Department of Education (ED) is the federal agency responsible for establishing policy, administering federal assistance, and providing equal access to education for students around the country. The agency operates from three primary offices that handle constituent-facing services: the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA), the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE).
Common Areas of Assistance
Federal Student Loan Servicing Issues
My office can assist constituents who need help resolving a dispute with their loan servicer (e.g., MOHELA, Nelnet), including:
- Payment discrepancies: Issues that occur when federal student loan payments aren't received by the ED, applied to the wrong loan, or miscalculated based on mismatched records;
- Transferring accounts: Discrepancies that occur when student loan accounts move between servicers, often resulting in missing payment records or inaccurate account balances.
PSLF
My office can help constituents navigate the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) process, including:
- Employment certification: Disputes over an employer's status as a 501(c)(3) organization or government agency;
- PSLF payment counting errors: Issues involving the correction of a constituent's fulfillment history to ensure all 120 monthly payments meet the requirements for full loan discharge.
Loan Discharge
My office can assist constituents who require assistance with specialized paths to debt relief, including:
- Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) discharge: Helping veterans and constituents with disabilities navigate the medical documentation process required for loan discharge;
- Closed school discharge: Assisting students who attended colleges that shut down.
Teacher Loan Forgiveness & Grants
My office can help teachers navigate TEACH Grant conversions to high-interest loans due to a missed paperwork deadline or certification error.
Limitations to Assistance
My office will do everything possible to assist constituents within the legal and practical limitations of a congressional office. Please note that a congressional inquiry does not guarantee faster processing or a favorable outcome. If my office reviews your concern and determines that it falls outside the scope of congressional assistance, my office will do our best to direct you to the appropriate resource for further help.
- Private student loan terms: Student loans that are issued by private banks fall outside federal control. My office cannot negotiate lower interest rates, payment pauses, or principal reductions.
- Legal Advice: My office cannot provide legal advice or act as an attorney if a constituent is currently suing the Department of Education or a school.
- Waiving eligibility requirements: My office cannot dispute forgiveness requirements established by law.
