The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. CMS oversees Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the Health Insurance Marketplace.
Common Areas of Assistance
My office can assist with a variety of inquiries regarding the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, including issues related to enrollment, eligibility, and billing discrepancies. While we cannot file appeals or overturn agency decisions, we can facilitate communication with the agency to ensure your case is judged fairly. This includes checking the status of applications and appeals, highlighting administrative errors, and requesting further information on why specific decisions were made.
Limitations to Assistance
My office will do everything possible to assist constituents within the legal and practical limitations of a congressional office. Please note that a congressional inquiry does not guarantee faster processing or a favorable outcome. If my office reviews your concern and determines that it falls outside the scope of congressional assistance, my office will do our best to direct you to the appropriate resource for further help.
State Agencies
In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Medicaid is administered by MassHealth, and the Commonwealth's health insurance exchange is managed by the Massachusetts HealthConnector. My office does not have jurisdiction over these state-run agencies, and therefore does not have the authority to access records or influence decisions. For issues regarding eligibility, enrollment, or appeals within MassHealth or the HealthConnector, please contact your State Legislator. My office can assist if you are experiencing interstate issues, such as difficulties transferring your Medicaid benefits when moving to Massachusetts.
Medicare Via Social Security Enrollment
If your Medicare issue is related to your initial enrollment, premium payments, or Part B late enrollment penalties, these are processed by the Social Security Administration. Please visit our Social Security Administration Casework Page.
Private Insurance & Employer Plans
My office cannot intervene in disputes between individuals and private companies, including employer sponsored insurance, private supplemental insurance (Medigap), or Medicare Advantage plans. These plans are governed by state insurance laws and are administered by private companies. You may consider contacting the Massachusetts Division of Insurance or filing a complaint with CMS if you believe your insurer has broken Massachusetts law or CMS statutes and regulations.
Final Agency Decisions & Formal Appeals
While we can request a status update or a review of your file, my office cannot overturn a non-favorable CMS decision or bypass the standard mandated appeals process.
If you have been denied an application or an appeal, follow the specific instructions provided in your CMS Notice of Denial to file a formal appeal within the required timeframe. You can request assistance in the event that you experience delays with your appeals process or difficulty receiving timely information regarding your appeal. For assistance, please fill out the form below to contact my office. If your matter is urgent, you may also call our Boston office at (617) 565-3170 or our Springfield office at (413) 788-2690.
