Senators Warren, Blumenthal, and Colleagues Demand Trump Revoke Illegal Proclamation Targeting Asylum Seekers

“This cruel policy will undermine law and order in our immigration system, needlessly cause death and suffering to refugees seeking safety, and imperil our national security.”

Boston, MA - United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), and seven of their senate colleagues, today called on President Donald Trump to immediately revoke an illegal Presidential Proclamation that would drastically limit the ability of refugees to claim asylum. Last week, U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar granted a temporary restraining order blocking implementation of the Proclamation, which directly contradicts existing statute.

“Your decision to bar asylum seekers from receiving safety in the United States recalls some of the darkest moments in our nation’s history. It evinces a complete disregard for our values, our national security, and our laws. We urge you to reverse course immediately and revoke this Proclamation,” the senators wrote.

Today’s letter was also signed by U.S. Senators Tom Carper (D-De.), Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.).
