Senators Warren, Markey and Congressman Keating Statement on EPA Region 1 Announcement of Sole Source Aquifer Review Process Including Public Participation for Proposed Multi-Purpose Machine Gun Range Project at Joint Base Cape Cod
Washington, D.C. - Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), and Congressman Bill Keating (MA-09) released the following statement today after the Environmental Protection Agency Region 1 decision to provide additional information and offer a public participation process for the Sole Source Aquifer review for the proposed Multi-Purpose Machine Gun Range at Joint Base Cape Cod.
“We applaud EPA Region 1’s decision to provide additional information and offer public participation for the Sole Source Aquifer review of the proposed machine gun range project at Camp Edwards on Joint Base Cape Cod. This review process is crucial to understanding the impact the gun range poses to public health, public safety and our public lands with input from both abutters and those who rely on Cape Cod’s sole source aquifer for safe, clean, and plentiful drinking water,” said the lawmakers in a statement. “We remain concerned about the unknown effects that the construction of this gun range could have on the aquifer and are hopeful that this review will provide much-needed answers to the residents of Cape Cod.”
In April, Senators Warren and Markey, along with Congressman Keating, sent a letter to the Army National Guard expressing concerns about a proposed MPMG Range at Camp Edwards and requested that the Guard consider conducting a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the range.
