Senator Elizabeth Warren Co-Sponsors Older Americans Act Reauthorization Bill
WASHINGTON, DC - United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) today announced that she will be an original co-sponsor of the Older Americans Act reauthorization bill for 2013. The Older Americans Act, which was first signed into law in 1965, supports important services for seniors such as meals, senior centers, caregiver support, and job training. The Act expired in 2011.
"I'm proud to co-sponsor the Older Americans Act (OAA), which will help ensure seniors in Massachusetts and across the country have access to critical programs such as Meals on Wheels, adult day services, and pension and legal counseling," said Senator Warren. "We should honor commitments to our parents, grandparents and all older Americans by reauthorizing and strengthening the OAA."
The Older Americans Act reauthorization legislation was introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in the Senate yesterday. This May also marks the 50th anniversary of Older Americans Month, which recognizes the contributions of seniors to our communities. When President John F. Kennedy designated the first Older Americans Month in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached age 65 and about one-third of them lived in poverty. Today, seniors are able to live longer and more independently with the help of programs such as Medicare, Social Security and those supported by the Older Americans Act.
