Warren, Markey demand answers from State Department about treatment of Americans on flotilla detained by Israel

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward J. Markey are among five lawmakers demanding answers from Secretary of State Marco Rubio about his department's "failure to provide timely" help to Americans detained in Israel after its military forces intercepted Gaza-bound aid ships last week, according to a copy of a letter sent Wednesday.

About 20 Americans, including two brothers from Massachusetts, were among the more than 400 international activists who were on the flotilla carrying aid to Gaza. The flotilla was stopped on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 and the activists taken into custody. The group had sought to break the Israeli blockade in an effort to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
