Bloomberg Tax: Warren Seeks More Ethics Commitments from Trump Tax Nominee
President Donald Trump's nominee to oversee federal tax policy should take additional steps to sever his decades of tax lobbying from his next government job, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) wrote to him in a letter obtained exclusively by Bloomberg Tax.
Warren asked that Kenneth Kies, Trump's pick to be assistant secretary for tax policy at the Treasury Department, to divest from holdings in companies that lobby the agency, recuse himself during Trump’s entire term from business related to former clients, and forgo opportunities to work in or advocate for industries he’ll regulate for at least four years after he leaves office.
"I am concerned that, if confirmed, you would enter this role with significant conflicts of interest that could cloud your judgment or raise questions about the integrity of official decisions in which you are involved," Warren wrote in the letter dated April 9.
Warren sits on the Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over Kies’s nomination. Kies is scheduled to testify before the panel Thursday as he seeks Senate confirmation, a prerequisite to taking office.
