Warren Urges Trump to Continue Food Assistance, End the Government Shutdown

Washington, D.C. — As President Trump terminates food assistance for millions of Americans, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren released the following statement:

“For the first time in U.S. history, the President is cutting off food assistance and telling more than 40 million Americans to eat dirt. Due to President Trump’s decision, mommas and babies will go hungry because they cannot afford groceries.

“Instead of breaking the law and attempting to cover up his tracks by deleting parts of the government’s website, the President must immediately reverse course and use the nearly $6 billion emergency fund that Congress approved for this very purpose to keep food on the table. If Trump won’t act, Congress must, and I have co-sponsored bills from both Republican Senator Hawley and Democratic Senator Lujan to keep SNAP benefits going.

“Enough is enough – it’s long past time for the President to get serious and direct Republicans in Congress to negotiate with Democrats to help lower health care costs and end this government shutdown.”
