Warren Turns Up the Heat on Unpopular Republican Policies That Violate the Byrd Rule
House Republicans included several provisions in the Big Beautiful Bill that violate Senate rules for budget reconciliation
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) released a new video series underscoring the harmful and unpopular provisions included in Republicans’ “Big Beautiful Bill.” Senator Warren warned of five dangerous provisions: 1) defunding Planned Parenthood, 2) cut regulations for dangerous gun silencers, 3) a ban on state and local regulation of AI, 4) gutting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and other financial regulators, and 5) a provision that would limit the court’s power to hold Trump officials accountable for ignoring court orders.
“I’m going to use every tool I have in my tool box to strip [these] provision[s] out of the bill, but I need everyone else to join me in this fight,” said Senator Warren.
In the first video, Warren discussed a provision that would block Medicaid from paying for any health care services at Planned Parenthood health centers, severely limiting access to reproductive care. Planned Parenthood has reported that nearly 200 health centers would be at risk of closing due to this provision, with 90% of those centers located in states where abortion is legal.
“Donald Trump and Republicans are using this bill to push through a backdoor ban on abortion across the entire country, even in states where abortion is legal,” said Senator Warren. “It is one step closer to banning abortion nationwide.”
In another video, Warren walked through Congressional Republicans’ plan to slash taxes and restrictions on purchasing gun silencers. If passed, this provision would make it easier for anyone—violent criminals included—to get their hands on one of these dangerous silencers.
“This gun lobby tax break means it will be easier for anyone to get their hands on one of these things, violent criminals included,” said Senator Warren.
In a third video, Warren highlighted Congressional Republicans’ attempt to ban states from directly regulating artificial intelligence (AI), referencing housing software RealPage’s use of AI to help landlords collude to hike up the cost of rent across the country.
“[This] gives companies like RealPage the green light to continue their AI schemes that raise your rent.” said Senator Warren.
In a fourth video, Warren slammed Republicans for trying yet again to destroy the CFPB, an agency that has returned $21 billion directly to families who have been scammed by big banks and wealthy corporations.
“Republicans don’t care that this is against Senate rules, and they don’t care that more Americans would get tricked and trapped,” said Senator Warren. “This is about destroying an agency that helps Americans who get scammed.”
In a fifth video, Warren discusses a provision snuck into the tax bill to stop courts from being able to hold any Trump administration officials in contempt if they ignore a court order. Senator Warren highlights how this could directly help the Trump administration ignore court orders.
“Since Trump has been defying courts left and right, he and his Republican buddies in Congress hatched a plan,” said Senator Warren. “Buried in the text of Trump’s big beautiful bill, there’s a small line that would stop courts from being able to hold Trump officials in contempt if they ignore a court order.”
