Politico: Weekly Tax: A hearing a long time coming
FIREWORKS INCOMING? The fate of the Republicans' one big, beautiful bill isn't the only big tax story in town this week.
Former Rep. Billy Long, President Donald Trump’s choice to lead the IRS, is scheduled to finally have a confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday.
His hearing will come as Trump administration hits the four-month mark - a period of true upheaval for the IRS, which has had four interim leaders in that spell, saw thousands of employees hit the door as part of the administration’s drive to reduce the size of government and took an unprecedented role in assisting immigration authorities with deportation efforts.
And Long is, in multiple ways, a curious choice to come in and calm the waters at the tax collector.
He hasn’t managed large organizations, like several previous agency chiefs, nor does he have much experience in tax policy or administration.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) noted as much in a new letter that, if nothing else, underscores how much Democrats are chomping at the bit to get Long on the record on a host of matters.
