Washington, DC – Today, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, Sens. Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), and Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), released a Government Accountability Office (GAO) review of whether President Donald Trump and his staff have followed appropriate protocol for handling sensitive national security materials at Mar-a-Lago and other locations.
The lawmakers requested the GAO review following reports that the President, his staff, and the Japanese Prime Minister discussed national security matters on “full view to fellow diners,” at Mar-a-Lago on February 11, 2017, and reviewed potentially sensitive national security material in apparent violation of security protocols. In their initial letter to the GAO, the lawmakers also expressed concern about the expenditure of taxpayer funds at Mar-a-Lago by the Secret Service and other government officials associated with the President.
